The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Solenoid

Electric conductor wound as a helix with a small pitch, as in a coil.

Solid Cable

All designs of medium and high voltage paper-insulated power cables except pressurized types.

Solid Conductor

A conductor that consists of a single wire.

Solid Shape

Any shape other than hollow or semi-closed extruded shape.

Solid Solution

A condition where one element is dissolved in another when the dissolving element is in a solid and not a liquid condition.

Solid Type PI Cable

A pressure cable without constant pressure controls.

Solidal Cable

Trade name for a PVC-insulated power cable with solid aluminum phase conduc­tors and concentrically applied neutral con­ductor comprising aluminum strips.

Solidification Shrinkage

The decrease in size accompanying the freezing of a molten metal.

Solidly Grounded

Having no intentional impedance in the grounding circuit.

Soluble Oil

1) Specially prepared oil that dissolves in water, either by its own chemistry or by an emulsifier. 2) A loosely used term for an oil/water solution used as a coolant.

Soluble Oil Concentration

The ratio of oil and water to blend a lubricant used for wiredrawing and rolling operations.

Soluble Oil Emulsion

Wiredrawing lubricants where an animal or mineral oil is emulsified with water at various concentrations.

Solution

Homogeneous mixture of two or more components, usually in a liquid form.

Solution Heat Treatment

A process in which an alloy is heated to a suitable temperature, held at this temperature long enough to allow a certain constituent to enter into solid solution and then cooled rapidly to hold the constituent in solution. The metal is left in a supersaturated, unstable state and may subsequently exhibit age hardening.

Solvent

1) The component of either a liquid or solid solution that is present to a greater or major extent. 2) The component that dissolves another component (solute) in a mixture.

Solvent-Bonded

Cables where bonding is accomplished by mating the surfaces of the wire insulation, cable jacket or spacer, then joining and driving off the solvents to form a cable. See Bonded Cables.

SOO

Designation for conductor like SO, but with oil-resistant insulation and jacket.

SOOW-A

Designation for conductor like SOOW, but weather and sunlight resistant jacket.

Southwire Continuous Rod

A manufacturing process to produce nonferrous rod by using a copper alloy wheel and flexible steel belt process that continuously casts a bar and has a follow-up rolling mill to produce the final shape. See Continuous Casting, Cast and Roll.

SOW

Designation for water resistant neoprene jacketed portable cord (C.S.A.).
