The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Siloxane Bridge Curing

A method of curing polyethylene without peroxide through the formation of organic silane bridges between the polymer chains.

Silver

Element, chemical symbol Ag. A brilliant metal with high ductility and excellent thermal and electric conductivity. Silver is used for applications from coins to jewelry, but it also has industrial uses that include wire, such as high-quality speaker wire, as well as plating and soldering applications.

Silver Solder

A soldering alloy that has the basic composition of varying proportions (10-percent to 99-percent silver), and may also contain zinc, copper, cadmium or phosphorus. An alloy contain­ing no silver but 92 percent copper and 8 percent phosphorus with a melting point of 705°C is also used. The effect of adding silver to copper or copper-zinc alloy is to lower the melting point and increase the fluidity of the solder which still retains high strength.

Silver Steel Wire

A general-purpose wire manufactured from high carbon steel used for drills, spindles and pinions. Despite its name, the wire does not contain silver, but is named for its silvery appearance.

Simplex Transmission

Transmission in a single direction. Generally, a communications system or device capable of transmission in one direction only.

Sine Wave

A periodic oscillation that can be expressed as a sine function.

Single Block

A wiredrawing machine that performs a single reduction function, drawing through one die, or two dies in a “double-deck” block.

Single Capstans

Similar to a shedding drum, except it has no space for accumulation of wire. It serves only as a pulling source. The wire takes several wraps and then is led onto what is usually a traveling take-up reel.

Single-Ended

Unbalanced, such as grounding one side of a circuit or transmission line.

Single-Spindle Drum

A pay-off drum that is used for re-passing traverse-wound bundles.

Single-Spindle Spool

A type of spindle used for payoff. Takes a round wire spool on a collapsible arbor.

Sinker Roll

Used to direct the wires below the surface of a treatment bath, for example in galvanizing.

Sinking Rollers

Used to direct the wires below the surface of a treatment bath, for example in galvanizing.

Sintering

The process of compacting particles together under heat and/or pressure to produce a homo­genous and dense mass whose uses include, among others, the produc­tion of tungsten carbide dies and guides.

Sinuous Spring

Another name for serpen­tine or zig-zag springs.

SIR

Designation for single lapping of pure rubber. Also abbreviated to SPR.

SIS

Designation for type SIS, rubber- or XLP-insulated switchboard wiring, 90°C. Indicates single-conductor with synthetic thermosetting insulation of heat-resistant moisture-resistant, flame-retarding grade. Also made with chemically cross-linked polyethylene insulation. Used for switchboard wiring, only 90°C.

Sizing

1) Applying a material to a surface to fill pores. 2) Establishing the dimensions of an object.

Sizing Die

Die used at the end of a wiredrawing operation to obtain product at the proper size. Also known as a finishing die.

SJ

Designation for junior hard service, rubber-insulated pendant or portable cord. Same construction as Type S, but 300V and with different jacket thickness.
