The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Moisture Resistance

The ability of a material to resist absorbing moisture from the air or when immersed in water.

Mold

A form or cavity into which molten metal is poured to produce a desired shape.

Mold Release Agent

Material used in contact with the stamping or casting surface in an operation that would give a continuous lubricant film and allow the product to release efficiently from the mold or die. The term “mold release” is used in conjunction with almost any type of casting or stamping operation.

Molded Case Breaker

A circuit breaker enclosed in an insulating housing.

Molded Plug

A connector molded on either end of a cord or cable.

Molecular Sieve

A device used in the continuous casting process for atmosphere protection. It absorbs carbon dioxide and water. The resultant product gas contains predominantly nitrogen and small amounts of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

Molecular Weight

The sum of the atomic weights of all of a molecule’s constituent atoms.

Molecule

The group of atoms which constitutes the smallest particle in which a compound or material can exist separately and retain the property of the material.

Molten End

A type of wire break that is created by a worn annealer band or sheaves.

Molybdenum

Element, chemical symbol Mo. A grayish metal that does not easily tarnish in air and has a high melting point of 2620°C (4748°F). Its use as an alloying element in steel increases hardenability and in low alloy steels reduces the risk of temper brittleness. When added to stainless steels it increases their resistance to corrosion. It is also used in high-speed steels.

Molybdenum Oxide

A commercial compound of molybdenum that is used as an alloying addition in making molybdenum steels.

Monochromatic

Radiation consisting of a single wavelength. In practice, radiation is never perfectly monochromatic but, at best, displays a narrow band of wavelengths.

Monofilament

A single-strand filament as opposed to a braided or twisted filament.

Monomer

The basic chemical unit used in building a polymer.

Motor Control Center

A grouping of motor controls such as starters.

Motor Effect

Movement of adjacent conductors by magnetic forces due to currents in the conductors.

Motor Lead Wire

Wire that connects to the usually fragile and easily damaged magnet wire found in coils, transformers and stator or field windings. General requirements are abrasion resistance, toughness, flexibility, dielectric strength, thermal resistance and low percentage of “extractables” where applicable, such as in hermetic wires.

Mounting Dies

Technique of mounting a natural diamond for careful orientation within the casting material.

Mouth

Cable entrance of a connector barrel.

MPF

1) Designation for mine power feeder of 5, 8 or 15KV. 2) Designation for millions of paired feet.
