The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Miniature Wire

Insulated conductors of approximately 20 to 34 AWG with small overall diameters.

Minimill

Small mill that services a particular product or market area and can be highly competitive because of the low investment cost.

Minimum Average

The smallest that an average of several measurements of an insulation or jacket thickness can be per specification.

Minimum Wall Thickness

The smallest that any single measurement of an insulation or jacket thickness can be per specification.

Minimum-at-a-Point

Specifications permitting the thickness at one point to be less than the average.

Mining Cable

A flame retardant cable especially constructed to withstand long-time immersion or exposure to moisture for underground use in the environment of a mine or tunnel.

Mischmetal

A name for a group of rare earths, namely Cerium (Ce), Lanthanum (La), Neodymium (Nd) and Praseodymium (pr). Ce and La are the main components. It is issued in a Galfan bath as a deoxidizer and as a wetting agent to get the proper coating integrity and application performance.

Mismatch

A termination having a different impedance from that for which a circuit or cable is designed.

MKS

Designation for meter-kilogram-second system of units.

ML

Designation for two wire types: Type A is AVC mine locomotive cable, 600V and UL approved. AVC cables do not carry flame or support combustion. Type B is a motor lead-type wire used as lead wire to electric motors with stranded copper conductor PVC, rubber or rubber and braid insulation.

Ml (2)

Designation for milliliter.

MM

1.)Designation for mining machine cable.
2.)Designation for millimeter.

Modem

Device that sends and receives data signals over telecommunication lines. A contraction of the term “modulator-demodulator.”

Modular Jack

Outmoded term. See Outlet/Connector, Telecommunications.

Modular Plug

A telecommunications connector for wire or cords. A modular plug can have six or eight contact positions but not all the positions need to be equipped with contacts.

Modulation

The varying of a “carrier” wave characteristic by a characteristic of a second modulating wave.

Modulus of Elasticity

See Young’s Modulus.

Moh’s Scale

A scratch hardness test for determining comparative hardness using 10 standard minerals from talc (the softest) to diamond (the hardest).

Moisture Absorption

The amount of moisture, in percentage, that a material will absorb under specified conditions.

Moisture Repellant

Constructed or treated to prevent the penetration of moisture.
