The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Clout Nail

A cut nail with a large flat circular head. Small clout nails are called tacks.

CM

Designation for Circular Mil. Also, centimeter.

CMA

Designation for Circular Mil Area.

CMP

Designation for Communications Plenum Cable.

CMR

Designation for Communications Riser Cable.

CNC

Designation for Computer Numerical Control.

Coarse Laid Rope

Rope formed from large wires. Also known as hard-laid rope.

Coat Hanger Wire

Either mild steel with clean bright finish for plating or plastic coating, galvanized with clean bright finish or PVC coated. It must be free from surface imperfections.

Coated Copper

A copper conductor that has been coated with a metallic substance. A tin coating is applied to protect copper from chemical attack by sulfur-based insulation compounds; a nickel coating is sometimes used for conductors rated for extremely high temperatures.

Coated Electrode

Electrode used in arc welding in which the metal wire is coated with fluxing constituents.

Coated Wire

Wire given a thin coating of metals such as tin, lead, nickel, etc. The coating is done by hot-dipping or plating, chemical or electrolytic. The coating is done for either corrosion protection or to improve other properties, such as adhesion to rubber or for appearance. Another material is PVC, often used as a coating for chain link fences. Special coatings also include the application of an insulator or dielectric to the surface of an electrical conductor for such applications as building wire, magnet wire, power distribution, high voltage, and telecommunications.

Coating

1) A material applied to the surface of a conductor to prevent environmental deterioration, facilitate soldering or improve electrical performance. 2) The process of covering steel with another material, primarily for corrosion resistance. 3) A protective layer of plastic put onto a fiber during drawing.

Coating Blister

Blister that occurs in the coating or liner of clad products. It is evident only on that surface of the sheet, shape or tube containing the blistered liner.

Coating Wirework

An antique bronze finish can be obtained on coppered mild steel wire by cold dipping in a steel bronze solution. This produces a chocolate surface color, which can be relieved by scratch brushing and finally protected by a clear lacquer. Plain brass or copper wirework should first be cleaned by dipping in nitric acid. After cleaning the mesh should be either cold or hot lacquered.

Coax

Abbreviation for Coaxial Cable.

Coaxial Cable

A cable consisting of two cylindrical conductors with a common axis, separated by a dielectric.

Coaxial Connector

A connector that has a coaxial construction and is suitable for use with coaxial cable.

Cobalt

Element, chemical symbol Co. Gray magnetic metal of medium hardness with good corrosion resistance. Used as the bonding material in most cemented carbides, but also in ferrous alloys for high-grade tool and magnet steels.

Cobble

1) A rolling mill line jam that occurs during rolling of various products such as nonferrous rod or wire and steel sheet. 2) A piece of steel which for any reason has become so bent or twisted that it must be withdrawn from the rolling operation and scrapped.

Code

Short term for National Electrical Code.
