The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Thermal Aging

A heat-treating procedure where a product is exposed to a thermal condition or programmed series of conditions for a specified period of time.

Thermal Conduction

See Conduction, Thermal.

Thermal Conductivity

See Conductivity, Thermal.

Thermal EMF

The electromotive force generated when the junction of two dissimilar metals is heated. See Thermocouple.

Thermal Endurance

The time at a selected temperature for an insulating material or system of materials to deteriorate to some predetermined level of electrical, mechanical or chemical performances under prescribed testing conditions.

Thermal Expansion

The expansion of a material when subjected to an increase in temperature. Specifically, the increase in length caused by heating. Expressed in centimeter per centimeter (or inches of increase per inch) of original length, per degree of temperature change.

Thermal Fatigue

Fracture resulting from the presence of temperature gradients that vary with time in such a manner as to produce cyclic stresses in a structure.

Thermal Rating

The maximum and/or minimum temperature at which a material will perform its function without undue degradation.

Thermal Reservoir

Thermal Resistance

See Resistance, Thermal.

Thermal Shock

1) The creation of a steep temperature gradient and accompanying high stress within a structure. 2) A test to determine the ability of a material to withstand heat and cold by subjecting it to rapid and wide changes in temperature. Note: a rapid temperature increase of the material can usually be avoided by proper warm-up prior to annealing. 3) A term used in metal working coolant/oil make-up procedures where cold make-up liquid would drastically alter the temperature of the coolant/oil and temporarily change the operating conditions until the body of the fluid’s temperature returns to its normal operating level.

Thermal Stress

Stress in metal, resulting from nonuniform distribution of temperature.

Thermal Stress Cracking

Crazing and cracking of some thermoplastic resins that result from overexposure to elevated temperatures.

Thermal Treatment

The procedure for treating metals for homogenization, re-heating for rolling, annealing, solution heat treatment and precipitation treatments. Each thermal treatment serves a specific purpose and does not necessarily apply to every alloy.

Thermionic Emission

The liberation of electrons or ions from a solid or liquid as a result of its thermal energy.

Thermistor

An electronic device that makes use of the change of resistivity of a semiconductor with change in temperature.

Thermocouple

A device for measuring temperature, consisting of lengths of two dissimilar metals or alloys that are electrically joined at one end and connected to a voltage-measuring instrument at the other end. When one junction is hotter than the other, a thermal electromotive force is produced that is roughly proportional to the difference in temperature between the hot and cold junctions.

Thermocouple Element

A thermocouple designed to be used as part of an assembly, but without associated parts such as the terminal block, connecting head or protecting tube.

Thermocouple Extension

Same as Thermocouple Lead Wire.

Thermocouple Extension Cable

A cable comprised of one or more twisted thermocouple extension wires under a common sheath.
