The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Screw Driver Wire

A high carbon wire, usually produced in spheroidized condition, and in a suitable temper for cold forming.

Screw Extruder

A machine that accepts solid particles (pellet or powder) or liquid (molten) feed, melts and conveys it through a surrounding barrel by means of a rotating screw and pumps it, under pressure, through a die.

Screw Flight

The helical thread of the screw.

Screw Root or Stem

The continuous central shaft of an extruder screw, usually of cylindrical or conical shape.

Screw Speed, Extruder

Number of revolutions of an extruder screw per minute.

Screw Stock

Metal in the form of wire or rod, ordinarily a free-machining type of alloy, used for making screw fastener products.

Screw Wire

Cold-heading grade wire used in the manufacture of various forms of screws. The severity of cold work to be done and the final application will dictate the composition of the material and the heat treatment (if any) applied to the wire.

Screw Wire, Brass

Brass stock that typically has a copper content of about 62-65 percent. It must be suitable for suitable for heavy amounts of cold working. See Brass Wire.

Scruff

The dross in a tinning bath consisting of iron-tin alloy and tin oxide.

SCT

SC, but with thermoplastic insulation.

SD

Designation for: 1) Service drop cable. Two insulated conductors cabled with a neutral conductor. 2) Self-damping overhead conductor.

SDC

Designation for Self-Damping Conductors.

SE

Designation for above-ground service entrance cable, not protected against mechanical abuse. Flame-retardant, moisture-resistant covering. Overall neoprene sheath, 60°C to 75°C.

SEA

Designation for service entrance cable, steel-armored under outer braid, one or two rubber-insulated conductors with neutral conductor served concentrically, moisture-resistant tape, weatherproof braid finish. 300V, 75°C.

Seale Construction

A strand construction with one size of cover wires with the same number of another size of wires in the inner layer. Each layer has the same length and direction of lay. The large outer wires, specifically designed for increased abrasion resistance, are resting in the valleys between the small inner wires.

Sealing Compounds

The material poured into an electrical fitting to seal and prevent the passage of vapors.

Seam

A defect on the surface of metal, a crack that has been closed but not welded. Usually produced by some defect either in casting or working, such as blowholes that have become oxidized or folds and laps that have been formed during working.

Seamless Pipe

Tubular product made from a solid billet, which is heated then rotated under extreme pressure. This rotational pressure creates an opening in the center of the billet, which is then shaped by a mandrel to form the pipe or tube.

Seamless Tube

A tube with an initial continuous periphery as when produced by extrusion or by drawing through a die.

Secondary

1) The transformer winding that receives energy by electromagnetic induction from the primary. 2) Downgraded material not suitable for its intended use, but still salable at a reduced rate for alternative applications.
