The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Reinforced Sheath

The outermost covering of a cable that has a sheath constructed in layers with a reinforcing material, usually a braided or double spiral fiber, molded in place between layers.

Reinforcement

A material used to reinforce, strengthen, or give dimensional stability to another material such as the braid portion of a sheath constructed in layers.

Reinforcement Wire

See Concrete Reinforcement Wire.

Reinforcing Bar

Also known as “concrete reinforcing bar” or “rebar.” A commodity-grade steel used to strengthen concrete in highway and building construction.

Relative Capacitance

The ratio of the material’s capacitance to that of a vacuum of the same configuration will vary with frequency and temperature. Also known as SIC (Specific Inductive Capacitance). An excellent indicator of chemical or physical changes in materials.

Relay

An electrically controlled device that opens and closes electrical contacts to effect the operation of other devices in the same or another electrical circuit.

Relay, Overcurrent

A relay designed to open a circuit when a current in excess of a particular setting flows through the sensor.

Reliability

The probability that a device will function without failure over a specified period or amount of usage.

Reluctance

Property of a magnetic circuit that determines the total magnetic flux in the circuit when a given magnetomotive force is applied.

Remanence

The magnetic induction that remains in a magnetic circuit after the removal of an applied magnetomotive force.

Remote Control Cable

Any cable used to activate and/or power a function or equipment located remotely from the source of control. Shielding is generally required on control cables where there are sensitive electronic components contained in the overall cable construction.

Remote Control Circuit

Circuit designed to provide signals for remote control operations.

Repeatability

The closeness of agreement among repeated measurements of the same variable under the same conditions.

Repeater

A device used in long transmission lines to amplify a degraded signal and increase the system transmission length if needed. It consists of a transmitter and a receiver or transmitter.

Repeater, Automatic Mill

Device on a rolling mill operation for squares and oval designs.

Repeaters, Between Stands

For providing loops in the products so they can be fed through more strands for the number of passes required for the finished product.

Reproducibility

The ability of a system or element to maintain its output over a relatively long period.

Reservoir, Thermal

A body to which and from which heat can be transferred indefinitely without a change in the temperature of the reservoir.

Residual Elements

Elements present in an alloy or pure metal in small quantities, but which are not added intentionally.

Residual Stress

Stress present in a body that is free of external forces or thermal gradients.
