The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

TPO

Designation for two stranded copper conductors with separator and code rubber insulation and copper braid over each. Laid parallel with cotton or rayon braid overall. For use in dry locations on small appliances. Same construction as type PO, but with extra flexible tinsel conductors, 125V.

TPS

Designation for toughened polystyrene.

TPSI

Designation for Tons Per Square Inch.

TPT

Designation for cord similar to TP tinsel cord, but all thermoplastic insulation and jacket, 125V.

Tracer

A means of identifying cable/polarity.

Tracer Stripe

When more than one color-coding stripe is required, the first (or widest) is called the base stripe, and the narrow stripes are called Tracer Stripes.

Tractor Capstan

The motivating power for large cables consisting of a nip between two moving endless bolts which grip the cable.

Traffic Mark

Abrasions that result from metal contact and vibration during transit.

Train

A grouping of roll stands connected end to end, or in series, in a rolling mill. In the construction of a rolling mill, these stands of rolls are placed so one engine or motor can drive them.

Training Radius

See Radius, Training.

Tramline

An incipient over-fill or lap usually occurring in parallel pairs of lines.

Transducer

A device for converting mechanical energy to electrical energy.

Transfer Impedance

For a specified cable length, this is the ratio of internal longitude in a voltage to the external current flow on the cable shield.

Transfer Mold

A type of rubber mold. A slab or rubber material is placed on top of a heated mold tool. Pressure is applied to push or transfer the material into the mold cavities. The mold is held under pressure and heated until the material cures. The mold is then removed to a device that opens the tool.

Transfer Route

Technique of transferring product to a new spooler for continuous in-line production.

Transfer Switch

A device for transferring one or more load conductor connections from one power source to another.

Transfer, Chain

A device used to move material in a rolling operation from a roughing stand to an intermediate stand.

Transformation Range

The temperature range in which a constitutional change occurs on heating or cooling a metal in the solid state. For ferrous materials, it is the range where austenite forms and ferrite or carbide progressively dissolves while ferrous alloys are being heated. Also, the temperature range within which austenite decomposes to form ferrite and carbide on cooling.

Transformer

An electrical device which changes voltage in direct proportion to currents and in inverse proportion to the ratio of the number of turns of its primary and secondary windings.

Transformer Strip

Rectangular or square section strip can be produced by drawing, rolling or a combination of both. Strip up to about 15 mm wide and 5 mm thick is drawn on conventional multiple drawing machines using shaped dies. Though product quality is high, a large stock of dies is necessary, die wear is heavy, drawing speeds are relatively slow and the soft temper inlet material is expensive.
