The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Power Pool

A group of power systems operating as an interconnected system.

Power, Apparent

The product of root mean square (rms) volts multiplied by root mean square (rms) amperes.

PP

See Polypropylene.

PPC

Designation for type SC flexible stage lighting power cable rated for extra hard usage.

PPM

P/M. Parts per million. For reference, 1 percent = 10,000 ppm. Also, parts per minute.

PR Cables

Polystyrene.

Pre-Bond

Stranded wire that has been fused, topcoat tinned or overcoat tinned.

Pre-drawer

A drawing unit synchronized with a cold header to draw rod or wire to close tolerance and feed it to the header. Permits lower rod stocks and is claimed to give cleaner products, increased tool life and higher tensile strength because the wire is fed warm to the production machine. Many wire diameters can be drawn from only a few basic rod sizes.

Precious Metal

One of the relatively valuable and scarce metals; gold, silver and the platinum-group metals.

Precipitation Hardening

Hardening caused by the precipitation of a constituent from a supersaturated solid solution. See Age Hardening and Aging.

Precipitation Heat Treatment

Artificial aging to precipitate a constituent from a supersaturated solid solution.

Predictive Control

A phrase used in speed or flow controls during the wire manufacturing process. A microprocessor adjusts to the control action based on system parameters which are designated as essential aspects of the process to provide the necessary speeds for insulation thickness, extrusion and other manufacturing objectives. Sometimes referred to as adaptive control.

Preece Test

Employed to test the uniformity of the coating of galvanized wire by noting the length of time the coat will withstand immersion in a solution of copper sulfate.

Preformed Wire Rope

Wire rope whose strands are permanently shaped to the form they assume in the finished rope, before the rope is fabricated.

Preheater

A device used to heat the conductor prior to extruding the insulation material. Its purpose is to prevent rapid cooling of the insulating material.

Preheating

1) Heating applied as a preliminary to some further thermal or mechanical treatment. 2) A process in which tool steel is heated slowly and uniformly to a temperature below the hardening temperature and is then transferred to a furnace in which the temperature is substantially above the preheating temperature. 3) A high temperature soaking treatment used to change the metallurgical structure in preparation for a subsequent operation, usually applied to the ingot.

Premolded

A splice or termination manufactured of polymers, ready for field application.

Press Forging

The forging process in which metal stock is formed between dies, usually by hydraulic pressure. Press forging is an operation that employs a single slow stroke. Compare with hammer forging.

Press Straightening

The process of straightening bar and large size rod and tube by means of mechanically or hydraulically actuated presses.

Pressure Cable

An oil-impregnated, paper-insulated cable in which positive gauge pressure is maintained on the insulation under all operating conditions.
