Elongation

The amount that a conductor can stretch before breaking when a pulling force is applied in tensile testing. The increase in the gauge length, measured after fracture of the specimen within the gauge length is usually expressed as a percentage of the original gauge length. Except in the case of extremely brittle wire, elongation is limited by the onset of necking. Cold drawing generally leads to a significant reduction in elongation. See Percent Elongation.
